In Michel Foucault's concept, a heterotopia is a "counter-site." This implies a real place that exists within the society that does not function like ordinary space. A heterotopia is not an imagination. It is physical and real, but is a reflection, challenge, or reversal of the values of normal social spaces. These places bring out all the violence, control, exclusion, and fear that have been hidden. Instead of providing comfort, heterotopias trouble our reactions to reality. Edward Bond's Lear is a play that relies heavily on space. Bond does not use settings as just a place where the story occurs. He designs spaces that control people, shape power, and reveal the political truth. The Wall, the prison cell, the Gravedigger's Boy's farm, and the blinding room are not neutral places. Each of them works as a heterotopia as they are separated from ordinary life and reveal how society really functions. Lear is a world in which there is cruelty, political tyranny, and suffering. Through heterotopic spaces, Bond forces the audience to confront the violence that supports the authoritative order. These spaces act as mirrors. About them, they portray the ways in which justice turns into brutality, the ways in which safety turns into threat, and in which morality disintegrates under political power. In this play, heterotopia is not employed to make a better society. Instead, Bond applies heterotopia to the examination of the existing one. His spaces detail how oppression works and the cost to human bodies (Bond 63–۱۵۷).
